Subject: Spring Campout May 10-12
Join us for Pack 25 Spring Camping!
Short Version:
DETAILS:
WHO: All Pack 25 scouts and their families (siblings, parents, grandparents welcome).
WHAT: Tent camping.
WHEN: Friday - Sunday, May 10-12, 2024. We are usually done reasonably early on Sunday (I plan to be back in time for 10:30 Mass). Yes, we know this is Mother's Day weekend.
WHERE: Pine Lake State Park near Eldora (~45 min. away) (https://www.iowadnr.gov/Places-to-Go/State-Parks/Iowa-State-Parks/Pine-Lake-State-Park). Below is a link for driving directions from St. Ed's.
RSVP: I need to hear back who will be going and how many children and how many adults by Monday, May 6 in order to plan food. Please RSVP by replying to this email (then I will be able to pull it up by searching for this email subject).
DEPARTURE: We plan a group departure from the scout garage at St. Ed's at 5:15 pm Friday, May 10, and the group will caravan to the park (~45 min.). You may also feel free to meet us at the park.
COST: $20 per person (to defray costs of food, campground rental, and equipment). Please advise if this creates a hardship for you, as the pack has funds for those in need. For families of scouts with funds in their scout accounts, this can be paid from those funds.
HEALTH FORMS: If you have not submitted a health form for this school year, it must be submitted to Chris Klaren (cklaren73@gmail.com) by May 3.
WEATHER: It is too early for a reliable forecast, but typical weather for this time of year has highs around 70 and lows around 50.
WHAT TO BRING: Water bottles (one for each person); tent; sleeping bags (one for each camper, weather appropriate); clothing, including Pack T-shirts (if you have one) and hiking boots or sneakers; any medications and toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) you typically use; flashlights; lawn chairs (one for each person); rain ponchos (one for each person, especially if rain is forecast); snacks to share, as desired; anything your scout's den leader asks your scout to bring (den leaders sometimes plan work on rank requirements); sunscreen; bug spray; and a helpful attitude (our parents and leaders will need your assistance with meals and cleanup). If you need a tent, lawn chair, or sleeping bag, let me know, as we have a number of these items available to borrow on a first come, first serve basis.
FEEL FREE TO ALSO BRING: Outdoor games; balls; cots if you use them; fishing equipment (historically, mid-May is a decent time to catch crappie in the Pine Lakes; Upper Pine Lake has reasonable shoreline access near our campsite); disposable dinnerware (if you are concerned about using the troop plates, silverware, etc., which of course gets washed after each meal). I plan to bring some extra fishing poles and basic panfish tackle for those who do not have tackle.
Please bring firewood if you can, as well.
PARENT/GUARDIAN ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED SUBJECT TO VERY LIMITED EXCEPTIONS. Please contact me ASAP if you desire to have your scout attend without a parent or guardian, as BSA rules strictly limit the number of scouts who may attend without a guardian.
DIRECTIONS: This will take you to the State Park. Pay attention to the signs to the camping area, which is near Upper Pine Lake (there are multiple entrances to this park, but only one goes to the campground): https://www.google.com/maps/dir/St.+Edward+Elementary+School,+East+Mitchell+Avenue,+Waterloo,+IA/42.3767988,-93.0705489/@42.3758125,-93.0690878,353m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m9!4m8!1m5!1m1!1s0x87e553bb3943587b:0xe33ba10ac7c818a1!2m2!1d-92.355105!2d42.4768605!1m0!3e0.
You can access a map at the park website (linked above), and that shows the group campsite (Y76).
Questions? Contact your son's den leader or me. Thanks, everyone!
