Pack 3025 Parents Meeting

1) Meeting called to order by John Henry at 7:30 pm.

2) Attending:  David Arntz; John Henry; Chris Klaren; Chris Mayer; Jeff & Zach Patrick; Mike Treinen; Andy Wolter

3) Review of previous meeting minutes – November meeting minutes approved

4) Reports:

·         Cubmaster

·         Comments included in other agenda items

·         Secretary

·         Review pack schedule for next 3 months – no changes were made at this time

·         Health forms, status – Completed forms are on hand for 20 scouts and 4 adults, and forms are needed for 7 scouts and 3 adults

·         Treasurer – Pack financial report:  The pack’s bank accounts total $1,642.75, with $987.33 in the general fund and $655.42 in scout accounts.  These amounts reflect the recent payment of our $1,478 recharter fees, and most, but not all, campout expense reimbursements.  Scout account balances can be found at http://troop1waterloo.org/1/pack25/ScoutAccounts.pdf.  Contact Chris Klaren for other details.

·         The question was asked on how we are tracking on campout income/expense.  While not normally a tracked item, a report will be prepared for the January parents meeting.

·         Please submit any outstanding reimbursable receipts for the last campout as soon as possible.

·         Monthly pop can earnings are shown after the end of these meeting minutes.  In view of the month-to-month variation, we are tracking somewhat with previous years.

·         Outdoor/activities

·         December 9 – Scout night at Waterloo Black Hawks Hockey, report.  12 total tickets were sold for 5 cub scouts and their families that attended.

·         December 17 – Pack Christmas party, report.  A good time for the boys and their families that attended.  Mike is already making adjustments to the one-handed gift wrapping activity for next year.

·         February 4 – Scout Sunday – Andy will follow up with St. Eds to make arrangements for the scout procession and coffee and donuts afterwards for 9:00 AM mass.

·         March 4 - Pinewood Derby & Blue/Gold banquet.  Car kits will be distributed at the Jan 7 pack meeting.  A copy of last year’s rules for the scout class are shown after the end of these minutes, along with the scout class rules for the district pinewood derby.  The group will review both sets of rules and finalize them for our 2018 pinewood derby.

·         Advancement – advancement activities

·         Webelos pins were awarded at the Dec 17 pack meeting/Christmas party.

·         Service Projects

·         Pop can tabs for Ronald McDonald House, report.  Tabs were not collected in December.

·         Chaplain – Religious awards, update.  A count indicates that we have 6 Wolves and 2 Bears that will be working on the Light of Christ award.  Chris will pick up 2 workbooks for the Bears.

·         Training – A list of available online training for leaders and pack committee members was provided at December roundtable.  A scanned copy can be found after the end of these minutes, and will additionally be emailed to all registered pack adults.

·         Equipment

·         Fundraising – Last pop can drive, Dec 2, report:  14 scouts participated and we expect a check of approximately $136.  Next planned Jan 6.

·         Membership – rechartering update.  The pack rechartered 28 youth and 10 adults (last year 25 and 7).  7 inactive youth were dropped.

·         Round Table Update – update from Dec 14 round table, contact Chris for more information.

·         Klondike Derby Feb 17, Boy Scouts and Webelos, information passed on to Webelos leaders.

·         Cub Scout Frontier Camp, Feb 24.  Possible Saturday activity for the pack, more discussion at next meeting.

·         On-line adult leader training – this item addressed previously in minutes

·         Philmont Training Center opportunities – Many in-depth training is offered at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.  There are activities for all member of the family to enjoy while adults are attending training, as well as family activities in the evening.  Philmont is a great experience; ask any Philmont participant, and they will say they want to go back.  Contact Chris for more information.

·         Wood Badge 2018 – addressed in previous months

5) Old Business

·         Webelos to Scouts transition, followup from November parents meeting.  No update, we need input from the Webelos 2 parents (5th grade scouts).

·         Insulated water canteens to replace disposable water bottles at campouts.  After discussion, the group decided to bring this back to next month’s meeting.

6) New Business

·         No new business

7) Announcements

·         Next parents meeting Monday, January, 15, 2018 at The O.P. (on Ridgeway Ave across from West High), meeting starts at 7:30 PM.

8) Adjournment – Upon having completed the evening’s business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.

·         Girls in Cub Scouting – what are the pack’s future plans?  Discussion needed with chartering organization.  Bring back to agenda in Feb 2018.

Pack 3025 2017 Pinewood Derby Rules

 

Our rules are modeled on the rules that come in the Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit (BSA Kit 17006).  They are known as the "Rules in the Box."
 

1.      Car Specifications: Width: - 2-3/4"; Length - 7"; Weight - Not over 5 Ounces; Width between wheels - 1-3/4"; Bottom clearance between car and track - 3/8".

2.      The car must have been made during the current year (year in which derby is being held) - Cannot use previous years cars - Pinewood Derby Car kits will be supplied by the pack to the Scouts.

3.      Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.

4.      The car shall not ride on springs.

5.      Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted.

6.      Only dry lubricant is permitted.

7.      Details, such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.

8.      The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.

9.      Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete.  After passing final inspection on race day, no further modifications to the cars may be made, and they will be impounded until the start of the race.

10.  If a car does not pass inspection at registration, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment.

11.  After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race.

 

 

2017 River Valley District Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations

 

Derby Car Kits:  The official BSA Pinewood Derby Kit and no precut kits will be allowed to compete in the Races.  Paint, decals, accessory trim pieces, and weights are allowed as long as their use complies with the inspection rules.

 

Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete. The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these specifications.  Once cars have been registered, weighed, and certified, they will remain in the hands of race committee until the end of the competition.

 

Scout Class

1.      Current year’s car (last 12 calendar months).

2.      Car size:

a.       Maximum 5 ounces in weight.

b.      Maximum length of 7 inches

c.       Width 2¾ inches

d.      Minimum clearance of 3/8 inches

e.       Maximum height of 4 inches

f.       No altering of wheel base.

3.      Wheels

a.       Must use scout wheels (the wheels that come with the kit from the scout office).

b.      No hubcaps

c.       Dry lubricant only and applied outside prior to weigh in.

d.      Use scout axles (the axles that come with the kit from the office).

e.       No beveling, rounding or altering of the tires other than sanding to remove burrs.

f.       All four wheels must sit flat on the surface of the track.

g.      No bearings, washers, or bushings allowed.

4.      No liquid or moving weights.

5.      Once checked in the car does not leave the pit except for racing or for repairs approved by race officials.

6.      Center of the car’s front must be even with the front of the vehicle to allow for correct placement of the starter pin. When the car is loaded on the track against the starter pin no part of the car may extend past the starter pin.

7.      Any weight added must be firmly attached to the car.

8.      Cars powered by gravity only.
