Pack & Den Meetings – How do we meet, virtually, in-person, or
both, to keep scouts engaged, having fun, and working on advancement? Some of the methods discussed and brought up
at the December round table are:
· Zoom meetings – hard to keep everyone engaged, especially the younger dens. Project kits could be distributed prior to meetings
· Outdoor meetings – may be limited in what we can accomplish when it gets really cold
· Indoor – as we could be considered an extracurricular activity that currently is allowed by the state, we could meet indoors at an available, probably at some type of community organization such as the American Legion, Eagles Club, Elks, etc.
· Hybrid meeting – scouts could gather in family/friends pods to minimize contact, and Zoom meet in dens. This would also be difficult to keep younger scouts engaged.
· Mike will schedule a meeting with pack leadership to plan to resume some type of activities after the start of the new year.
·
Outdoor/activities
· Dec 20 – Pack Christmas party, update – canceled as discussed above.
· Feb 20 – Klondike Derby, Camp Ingawanis (Boy Scouts and Webelos)
· Sometime in February – Polar Bear, Camp Ingawanis (Cub Scouts: Bear, Wolf, Tiger)
· March 7 – Pinewood Derby, planning. Proposed rules for 2021 were reviewed and approved. They will accompany each pinewood derby kit that is handed out to the scouts. Trophies will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place in each den, 1st and 2nd place Overall for the pack, and Best in Show (picked by the scouts). 3 race stewards will be identified to quickly and fairly resolve any unforeseen issues that come up during the race. We will be identifying a pinewood derby chairperson to coordinate planning, setup, and teardown.
·
Advancement – no report
·
Service Projects
· Update on food bank and other potential projects – some discussion around collecting canned food at the Feb 6 pop can drive. “Cans for cans.” This would be publicized as we usually do with the church bulletin and the NextDoor smart phone app. Would also check to see if we could send some type of note home with express envelopes or other communication to St. Edward School families.
·
Chaplain – Religious awards, update. No report.
·
Training – Matt has completed the “Outdoor Ethics” training and will be sharing it
at the next campout. He is also looking
at Train the Trainer Leave No Trace training next year.
·
Equipment – Equipment committee, update. No
report from the subcommittee.
·
Fundraising – Pop cans, update

Next can
drive January 9, 2021 |
The new sorting table improved efficiency substantially, reducing time at the December can drive by at least 1.5 hours. However, the volunteers found the can drums cumbersome to use and taking excess space to store. Dave Arntz is looking at using hoops to secure the bags similar to our old table as it is believed will make it easier and quicker to change bags.
Mike and Ron are looking at picking up cans and bottles from Sunnyside in the summer months.
·
Membership
· Current roster: 47 youth (+8 from 2020 recharter) and 11 adults (-1 from 2020 recharter)
·
Round Table Update
·
Council
has scheduled Klondike Derby for Feb 20 (Webelos & Scouts USA), and is
planning for Polar Bear (Cub Scouts) for some time in February.
·
Planning
underway for day camps and residence (overnight) camps next summer for cub
scouts.
·
Scouting
and covid presentation: Units should
consider all possibilities for meetings, virtual, in-person, and hybrid
meetings. Virtual and in-person are
self-explanatory, hybrid could use “pods” (groups of scouts that are already
gathering together on a regular basis) to log onto a virtual meeting. Some dens are dropping off kits at members’
homes for the scouts to use in a virtual or hybrid setting. This allows the den members to work on belt
loops and pins in a virtual meeting. Be
sure to have scouts actively participating in virtual meetings to keep them
engaged.
5) Old Business
·
Recharter,
report. Our annual recharter was
completed last week. A very hearty thank
you to Matt for a job well done!
·
Class B
shirts, update. Families will be asked
to verify shirt sizes for their scouts after the first of the year. The pack will provide a custom Pack 3025
t-shirt free to each scout and adult leader.
Additional shirts will be available for order at our cost.
6) New Business
·
Journey
to Excellence, update. An end of year
review of the criteria showed that the pack met Gold level for 2020, the second
year in a row. However the real value
for this exercise is identify areas the pack can improve the scouting experience
for our scouts in 2021. We will review
this on a quarterly basis, starting in February.
7) Announcements
· Next parents meeting Monday, January 18, 2021 at 1850 Patio & Grill, meeting starts at 7:00 PM.
8) Adjournment - Upon having completed the evening’s business, the
meeting was adjourned at 9:00 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Chris Klaren
