Pack 3025 Parents Meeting

Monday, July 12, 2021, 7:00 PM

1) Meeting called to order by Mike Treinen at 7:04 PM

2) Attending:   Ron Wing, Matt Hennig, Chad Cook, and Mike Treinen

3a) Review previous meeting minutes

3b) Approve/revise this meeting’s agenda

4) Reports:

·         Cubmaster

·         Mike Treinen reiterated that we need to have assistant den leaders in place at all ranks and to designate them at the start of the school year. Mike talked on Saturday to a Wolf parent who may be able to serve that role for 2021-22.

·         Secretary

·         Review pack schedule for next 3 months

o   There was some question about Council and other activities commonly on the schedule in the fall, including the new scout day camp held by the Council, Young Eagles, and the geology event that has been held in the past.

o   Consensus to cancel the July 18 pack meeting.

o   See Fundraising, below, re possible cancellation of August can drive.

·         Quarterly Journey to Excellence review:  Matt Hennig explained that because the pack has exceeded qualification for Gold, the only thing that could impact a JTE “level” would be if all families were subscribers to Boy’s Life magazine, something that the committee did not feel was worth urging upon pack families.

·         Treasurer

·         Pack financial report:  As of June 14, Currently the pack’s accounts total $23,244.53, with sub accounts as follows:

             Cash accounts:

         Pack Accounts:

$5,907.88

checking

$10264.66

general fund

$17,010.00

savings

$11,694.79

scout accounts

$0

cash

$958.43

campership fund

$326.65

council account

$326.65

unit account at scout office

Since the last parents meeting, we had income of $1229 in 2 pop can checks, and no expenses.

There was a general discussion about pack finances and use of scout accounts. The consensus is that the pack is in solid financial shape, especially when you compare to 5 years ago.

·         Outdoor/activities

·         July 30 – Aug 1 – Pack campout at Maquoketa Caves State Park, update

o   Mike Treinen talked to the Den Chiefs on Sunday about leading the caves hike. The hike will likely take place immediately after breakfast.

o   Ron Wing will be leading a flag retirement ceremony. Suggestion was made to cut the flags into strips and have each scout bring a strip to the fire as part of the ceremony. Consensus was that some scissors would be brought, including some heavier for cloth flags, and Boy Scouts and/or adults would cut the flags into strips prior to the ceremony (probably in the afternoon). The ceremony would likely be held just before or just after supper. Suggestion was made to have leaders and Boy Scouts wear Class A uniforms for the event.

o   Mike Treinen and/or Matt Hennig might look into a skit or entertainment event that could involve some leaders and possibly the Boy Scouts in attendance.

o   Mike Treinen will select and purchase prizes, with possible emphasis on a caving theme (e.g. headlights, flashlights, etc.).

·         Pack visit to National Guard Armory

o   Ron Wing has been in touch with the Guard, wants to try to do it on a weekend when they have aircraft.

o   Ron will look to see if there is a time later September or October, so that we can involve new scouts.

·         ANOTHER IDEA: Ron Wing discussed with Chet at Metro redemption about having a tour of Metro’s facility. Consensus was that this would be interesting and educational for the scouts. Consensus further was that we first try to line up the National Guard Amory visit, as it sounds like Metro just requires a little advance notice and it can be arranged.

·         Advancement – advancement reports:  Advancement was discussed in a general sense. Mike Treinen has confirmed advancement of most scouts at the Webelo 1, Bear, and Lion levels; still need to double check at the other ranks.

·         Service Projects

·         Canned food to be collected at a fall pop can drive, Sep or Oct?:  Discussion of this event was tabled, as the recollection was that Stephanie Klaren was taking lead on this.

·         Chaplain – Religious awards, update:  Matt Hennig will be talking with Charlie Donohue about having Bears complete Light of Christ in the fall, to be ready to be awarded medals by Scout Sunday.

·         Training – Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) being planned for September 17-18:  Only 2 or 3 leaders are currently BALOO trained; there was discussion that we need to get additional pack leaders to BALOO, hopefully to this event. If the Council were to (again) cancel BALOO, the Pack will look into BALOO at other councils, in an effort to encourage leadership to take BALOO elsewhere. Chad Cook and Ron Wing expressed interest in attending BALOO.

·         Equipment

o   Matt Hennig has been obtaining used Swiss Army Knives appropriate for Whittling Chip, will be cleaning them up, and will be obtaining a watertight container so that a number of these knives can be kept in the scout trailer for use on pack overnighters and other meetings. There may be some that can be given, even personalized, in recognition of achievements by our scouts and services others have provided to our pack. Consensus was that this was a good use of pack money, currently estimated to be $200-400 total, and a valuable resource for future campouts.

o   The right wheel packing is missing a cap and we will request this to be replaced when we next have the trailer into Jim Lind for service, perhaps before the upcoming campout. The issue is not considered urgent.

o   The trailer, complete with tents, propane, cooking equipment, folding tables, cooler jugs, and gaga ball pit and balls has been moved to Blessed Sacrament due to the upcoming resurfacing of the St. Ed’s parking lot.

                                     Next can drive August 7, 2021 ??

Ron Wing is considering cancelling the August can drive. He and Mike Treinen are unable to participate, there are concerns about participation levels, and because July was later in the month, there will be a smaller interval likely to result in a smaller collection. Mike Treinen expressed concern over competing can drives, of which there were at least 2 this past weekend, and people perhaps becoming accustomed to going elsewhere with their cans. Mike Treinen proposed we make the decision (whether to cancel) at the time the bulletin announcement needs to be submitted, and Matt Hennig agreed with that approach.

·         Membership

·         Current roster: 43 youth (-3, crossover to Boy Scouts) and 12 adults (-1, transfer to Troop 29)

·         2021 fall recruiting, discussion continued:  Matt Hennig will propose recruiting plans in the August meeting. Per the provisional calendar entries, a school assembly of sorts would be requested for early September, followed by an evening meeting and probably another recruiting session at the next Sunday meeting, similar to what we did this past year (and we have a banner from last year to utilize for this).

·         Round Table Update

·         Roundtable not scheduled for June & July

·         Concern was raised that the Cubmaster should attend council roundtables as much as possible. Mike Treinen agreed to start attending roundtables, provided Conservation Board meetings (which start at 5 on the same night each month) do not run too long.

5) Old Business

·         Flag retirement ceremony at Maq Caves campout:  See above under Outdoor/activities.

6) New Business

·         No new business not already covered above.

7) Announcements

·         Next parents meeting Monday, August 16, 2021 at 1850 Patio & Grill, meeting starts at 7:00 PM . Ron Wing expressed concern about how to get more parents, and specifically more of our leadership, to attend the monthly committee meetings. An informal discussion was held concerning trying to get attendance up, especially for the purpose of assigning roles for campouts and other events, since it makes it more difficult to plan events and activities when we don’t know who will commit to assist.

8) Adjournment - Upon having completed the evening’s business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chris Klaren, on behalf of Michael Treinen who supplied the meeting notes.

July 17, 2021

Tabled/planned items for future consideration:
